HEALING THE MIND
BEYOND MEDICATION
Millions of people suffer from mental and emotional illness. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that at any one time, over 12 percent of the American population suffers some form of mental illness. However, less than 10 percent of those affected by this problem will seek proper diagnosis and treatment. Research shows that the main reason that most people avoid the mental health system is fear of the treatment itself. In the past, psychiatric evaluation and treatment has had a notoriously spotty record. Recent advances in antidepressant medications, anxiety drugs, and antipsychotic regimens have improved the side effect profile, safety, and efficacy of many of these drugs. One major problem remains, in order to function the patient must religiously take expensive and sometimes dangerous medications that offer no hope of cure for mental illness.
At present, modern medical science has not come up with a cure for mental illness. However, there are a number of effective and little known treatments that offers a ray of hope for these clients. These “alternative” treatments go beyond the medical model that depends on the science of the neurotransmitter. In a three-hour workshop Dr. Mitchell Gibson, a well-known mental health expert, will explore the history of a number of effective treatment modalities that begin in a world where the pharmacological intervention ends. Join Dr. Gibson for a provocative and informative look at the science of Healing the Mind: Beyond Medication.
