The Mental Health Series
Our mental health series is designed to help educate the public about the basics of mental illness. After working in the field of mental health for more than 20 years, I have learned that a great number of people do not know the basics of most mental problems. A large part of my time as a psychiatrist requires me to educate the public about the various mental disorders, why they occur, how to diagnose them, and how to treat them. I always wanted a tool that would answer these basic questions in a straightforward manner that my clients could use on their own. The Mental Health Series will cover the most common of all the mental disorders.
What is Depression?
The first of our productions covers the most common of all these disorders; major depression. Depression is a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think about things. A depressive disorder is more than a passing mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness, and it cannot be willed or wished away.
A depressive disorder involves the body, mood, and thoughts. People who are depressed cannot "snap out of it" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for months or years. The What is depression lecture covers the basics of this most devastating disease.
How common is depression?…..who does it strike?…..what are the symptoms?….what questions should I ask my doctor if I am concerned about being depressed?…..what would happen if I didn’t get treatment?…..what causes depression?….do famous people get depressed?
The What is Depression? Lecture comes as a 40 minute DVD video lecture or as an audio presentation.
